4 Things That Can Damage Your Roof

Spring and summer bring rain showers, and it’s important to make sure your home’s roof is prepared. At the beginning of the spring season, you might want to climb on your roof to inspect its condition and determine if there are any areas of concern. A damaged roof can result in leaks and flooding, which can lead to problems like wood rot and mold. If you have roof damage, it’s important to identify the culprit so you can prevent further issues in the future. Here are a few common reasons roof damage occurs.

  • Animals. Animals can get onto roofs and scratch, chew, and dig at the shingles. This can create punctures that allow water to penetrate your roof. Keep an eye on your roof and gutters for any sign of animal life, and clear away any animal nests you find.

  • Trees. If you have trees in close proximity to your roof, take a look at the area where tree branches hit. If they brush your roof, they could be wearing away at the shingles. Over time this can cause your shingles to break down. Trim any branches that may cause a threat, or remove the tree altogether.

  • Weather. Stormy weather like hail or strong wind can cause shingles to come loose, and can even puncture your roof. After a big storm, it’s a good idea to inspect your roof for potential damage. If you notice any problems, have them fixed as soon as possible to prevent them from getting worse.

  • Debris. Sometimes debris can collect on your roof or in your gutters. This causes a dam that prevents water from draining properly. Standing water can eventually seep under your roof shingles and cause an attic leak. If you notice any debris, make sure to remove it. Gutters should be cleaned at least twice yearly to ensure they are free of clogs.

If you have noticed any damage to your roof, it’s important to get it addressed as soon as possible. The sooner the problem is fixed, the less likely more complicated problems will occur.
