Anchorage Summer Hikes

wide river valley with snowy mountains and pinewood forests

We really enjoy getting outdoors during these warmer months. Each weekend we try and do our best to take full advantage of the longer days the land of the midnight sun has to offer. One of our favorite things to do this time of year is get out and hike! Alaska has some of the best hiking in the nation and we feel so lucky we get to enjoy it all summer long! Here are a few of our favorite hikes!

  • Byron Glacier Trail- Although this is a shorter trail it is worth it for all the views. This trail is 1.4 miles and ends at the edge of Byron Glacier.

  • Thunderbird Falls - This trail is located north of Eagle River and is a 1-mile trek through a birch wood forest. Make sure you make it to the end to view the 200-foot waterfall!

  • Flattop Mountain - This beautiful hike is only 15 miles from downtown Anchorage and it is by far one of the most popular day hikes!

  • Bird Ridge - This starts at sea level and goes up 3,400 feet. The total hike distance is 3 miles. This gorgeous summit will give you views of Turnagain arm!

  • Crow Pass - This is typically hiked in 2 days. Crow pass connects Eagle river nature center to the town of Girdwood via the mountain pass. 26 miles in total. Most hikers will camp in Chugach overnight!
