How to Prevent a Winter Flood

Floods in winter are not uncommon and are usually due to melting snow. As the snow melts, water can penetrate and damage your home. It is important to take precautionary measures and be prepared for potential floods so you do not experience any damage you your house. Here is what you can do.

Watch the local weather forecast. Pay attention to any upcoming flood warnings, rain, or sudden warm weather that could cause snow to melt quickly.

Move the snow away from your home. Shovel snow away from the foundation of your home and clear out all any snow from gutters and drains. If there is snow on your roof, have it removed. This will direct water away from your home, reducing the rick of flooding.

Seal cracks in the exterior. Inspect your home for any cracks or potential entry points for water, and seal them. This will ensure water is not unknowingly entering your walls or the foundation of your home.

Move valuables from your basement. Winter floods are most likely to occur in your basement because it is located underground. Take any valuable belongings off the floor and bring them upstairs in case of a flood. If you are unable to do so, stack cinderblocks under the items to allow water to gather underneath without causing any damage.

Install a sump pump. In the event water does enter your basement, installing a sump pump will help drain the effected area.
