How to Prevent Garage Mold
We all know mold can grow in damp areas of your home - the bathroom, kitchen, and basement - but did you know that it can also grow in your garage? Garage mold is not uncommon. Mold usually thrives in dark, moist, and warm environments, making your garage an ideal spot. Luckily, there are several ways you can prevent mold from making its way into your garage.
Clean up any water. Water can find its way into your garage in many ways. Spills, melted snow, and rainwater dripping from your car are just a few different examples. If you’ve noticed water pooling and not drying out, it’s best to remove it with a rag.
Install a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier is a great way to ensure your garage is free of any moisture. At the very least, consider placing a fan in your garage to dry everything out.
Use mildew-resistant building materials. If you plan to paint your garage, make sure to choose mildew-resistant paint. If you are remodeling or adding a garage, you can use special mildew-resistant materials for your walls as opposed to traditional interior drywall.
Switch out your cardboard storage boxes. Cardboard is an organic material that mold can feed on. It can easily retain moisture which can cause the boxes to break down easily, compromising their contents. Consider replacing your cardboard boxes with plastic bins which are mold resistant.
