The Cure for a Smelly Home

There are few things worse than walking into your home and being met with a distinct bad smell. Bad smells can be caused by a variety of different factors, and if the smell has been around for a while, your senses might be immune to it. Once the smell is identified, you can work on eliminating the cause of the smell for good.

Determining the source of the smell is the first step to getting rid of it. Factors such as: pets, mold, water damage, smoke damage, old laundry, and garbage can contribute to bad household smells. The smell can be throughout your house or limited to a certain room or area. There are a few places that may be more susceptible to picking up smells than others. Here is where to look.

The Kitchen: Water, food, and garbage can be a big reason for smells permeating from your kitchen. Check the dish towels, garbage can, sink, refrigerator, and other areas where you have food stored. It may be time to wash these areas thoroughly and throw away any food that may be expired.

The Bathroom: Bathrooms are very susceptible to mold growth and can sometimes have a musty, mildewy smell. Make sure your bathrooms have proper ventilation, and look for signs of mold growth on the ceilings and walls. Check that your towels are being frequently washed to eliminate any moldy smells.

The Laundry Room: Dirty clothes can leave a distinct smell, especially if they are damp and have been left out for a while. Similarly, your washing machine can develop a moldy smell if it is not cleaned and aired out regularly. If the smell is coming from your machine, it is time for a cleaning. If the smell is coming from elsewhere, check for signs of mold or leaks in the room.

Water Damage: If there is a musty smell throughout your home, you could have an underlying mold issue. Check all areas where there is potential for water damage. Appliances, windows, bathrooms, and basements are all places where mold is most likely to be found.

Smoke Damage: If you have experienced a fire, or have a smoker in the house, there is a good chance your home might smell like smoke. Smoke can permeate carpets, draperies, upholstery, and even paint. If the smoke damage is severe and you are unable to rid of the smell yourself, it may be a good idea to call a professional.

Pets: We love our pets, but they do have a distinct (and sometimes unpleasant) smell that can travel throughout your home. Make sure to bathe and groom your pets regularly, and clean their cages to ensure they are not causing your home to have a bad odor.
