Is your home a potential target for a home robbery? While there is no way to guarantee your home won’t be targeted, there are several things you can do to make your home less attractive to potential burglars.

Most home thefts are planned and occur during the day when no one is home, by way of the garage, back door, or side door. Thieves typically spend less than 10 minutes inside, and only take items from the first floor, since the second floor can take a longer amount of time to access. With this knowledge, you can take steps to secure your home and deter thieves.

Homes that are typically targets for theft have valuables that are left out and able to be seen from your door or window. Have you left your laptop or purse on the kitchen counter? If potential thieves are able to see valuables like this from the outside of your home, they are more likely to target it.

Make sure all entrances to your home are well lit, the doors are solid core, and each is secured with a deadbolt. These factors make your home more difficult to enter, and show that you have taken security measures to secure your home. Adding security cameras over doorways and by windows could also help to deter potential thieves.

Taking these easy steps will help to protect your home and prevent theft. Always be aware of how your home appears from the outside. If there is any reason you think your home may be a target, make any safety adjustments as needed.
