Pros and Cons of Doorless Showers

Male bathroom

If you have been doing research on bathroom renovations lately, you may have noticed that one of the biggest trends right now is walk-in, doorless showers. These sleek showers come in a variety of different styles and sizes to match your design and functionality needs. While they are growing in popularity, these showers aren’t for everyone. We’ve compiled a list of pros and cons to help you decide if you should opt for a doorless shower during your bathroom renovation, or just admire them from afar.

The Pros

  • Accessibility. If you or someone in your home has mobility problems, doorless showers are a great option. They are extremely easy to walk into and don’t require you to step over any lips or bathtubs.

  • Customization. Doorless showers can be framed with your choice of tile wall or with modern glass panels. Since there is no tub or shower tray, the size of the shower can be customized to your unique bathroom. You can add wall cutouts for soap and shampoo, or add multiple shower heads if you desire. The possibilities are endless.

  • Appearance. As we mentioned above, doorless showers are very on-trend right now. They can make your bathroom look modern and sleek. If you opt for glass panels in your doorless shower, they can make your bathroom look larger since there is no door or visible wall closing off the shower space. If you have a smaller bathroom, a doorless shower could make the area look much larger.

The Cons

  • Size. Doorless showers generally require more square footage than a standard cubby shower with a door. If you have a very small bathroom, you might not have the space to accommodate a proper-sized doorless shower.

  • Heat loss. Since there is no shower curtain or door to trap the heat and steam of your shower, you may notice that showering in a doorless shower can seem a little cooler than taking a traditional shower.

  • Wet floors. Depending on the placement of your shower head and the door opening, doorless showers could cause the floors and areas outside of your shower to get wet.
